FASHION REVOLUTION
Seasalt
Cornish brand, Seasalt, immediately state on their standards page how they've always tried to run their business ‘in a fair and honest way, right from the early days in Penzance’, (Seasalt, 2013). Seasalt are extremely good at uniting with local business’, especially through their Locally Made project, in which they sell a range of cards, art and pottery sourced from the UK. For example, within their Falmouth branch, Leach Pottery a brand based in St Ives, is sold within store. This collaboration helps not only to bring a creative atmosphere to the store, but for the Seasalt to work with artists.
‘Where are Seasalt clothes manufactured?
Our products are mainly manufactured in India, Sri Lanka, Turkey and China, and we have a 'Locally Made' collection we manufacture locally in the South West, Guernsey and across the UK. And we hope that by next year 10% of our clothing range will be made in the UK. We have a strict policy in sourcing our manufacturers, both at home and abroad, and are signed up to the Ethical Trading Initiative Base Code.’ (Seasalt, n.d.)
‘Why organic?
We were the first fashion company ever to get garments certified to Soil Association standards. Neil and Sophie Chadwick saw first-hand the positive impact that buying organic can have, and they decided that Seasalt would always produce as much clothing organically as they could.’ (Seasalt, n.d.)
Seasalt (2013) continue to explain, ‘it is our aim that all our suppliers, whether in the UK or abroad, share our commitment to our working standards and we ask each of them to comply with our Purchasing Policy’. Looking into the brands policy they explain how they strive to ensure that their products ‘are produced and delivered under conditions that do not involve the abuse or exploitation of people’, and that ‘have the least negative impact on or environment’, (Chadwick, 2015).
The family owned business aim to provide a sustainable and safe environment for all of their workers. Seasalt (n.d.) explain how, ‘we’ve recently been recognised for our sustainable approach to growing our business by becoming the first fashion company ever to win the Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development’. In terms of the garments themselves Gallagher (2014), explains how ‘the brand also has a strong ethical stance and 35% of its spring 14 range was organically produced’.
As a brand, Seasalt work to support good causes, for example they are selling car stickers and tote bags, to help raise money for the restoration of the old art deco style Jubilee swimming pool, in Penzance, the campaign is referred to as Save Our Lido. Another example, is Seasalts Jute shopping bag, made in collaboration with four famous faces, Same Judi Dench, Alex Polizzi, Monty Halls and Savannah Miller. A pound of the money goes towards the Fisherman’s mission, a company which ‘provide 24 hour emergency support as well as crucial practical, financial, spiritual and emotional care to fisherman and their families’, (Seasalt, n.d.)
