Falmouth Selected To Host Fashion Revolution Event

On Monday 9th November, Falmouth University will host a uniquely themed public event, The Arts and Speaker Tour, curated by Fashion Revolution. An exhibition will be located from 12:00 pm in the Compass and a panel discussion will take place in the Chapel Lecture theatre from 5.30 with a screening of the True Cost Film. The event aims to highlight the issues facing the global fashion industry and encourage young people to become part of the solution.

The event will kick off in the afternoon with a compelling photographic exhibition on sustainability in the textile and fashion supply chain, designed by Fashion Revolution. Alongside this will be a display created by second year Fashion Marketing students focusing on the Living Wage. As part of the Arts Speakers Tour, a live panel discussion on Decent Jobs and Sustainable livelihoods will take place in the evening followed by a film screening of the True Cost Documentary Film.

The Arts and Speaker Tour is an opportunity for a wide audience to be educated, informed and share a discussion into the issues surrounding garment manufacturing on a global scale. It about getting the youth of today to think about the problems we are facing as an industry and creating solutions to battle the issues.

Orsola de Castro, Fashion Revolution Co-Founder said:

'With the new global developments goals hot off the press, 2015 is a decisive year when we can make our mark on history and young people’s voices need to be heard. We want the Arts and Speakers Tour discussions to be interactive and inspiring, encouraging the audience to suggest ways in which they and their peers can help to bring about much needed change within the global arena'.

Abbie Davies, Falmouth University Fashion Marketing Student:

‘Working with Fashion Revolution has opened my eyes to the realties of Fast Fashion and the impact it’s having on a global scale.  The aim of the exhibition is to challenge people’s pre conceived ideas of the fashion industry and educate them with how, as the consumer we can make a positive change. As a generation completely obsessed with a throw away culture, we need to re-assess the way we shop and think of new ways to develop to ensure a sustainable industry with a future.’

With a global following Fashion Revolution has gained the support of multiple icons in the fashion industry with support from the likes of fashion designer Stella Mc Cartney, model Lily Cole and creator of the Green Carpet Challenge Livia Firth. This highlights the current impact Fashion Revolution is having on the Fashion industry and how ethical fashion is the vision for the industries future.

The afternoon is set to be an exciting opportunity for Falmouth Universities Fashion and Textiles Institute as they become part of a national tour, supporting to promote an industry that values its people, the environment, creativity and profit in equal measure. If its fashion, sustainability or human rights that you’re interested in it’s an event you won’t want to miss.

This is a free event open to the general public, students, young people, local business and press.
