What is the Clean Clothes Campaign?
The Clean Clothes Campaign is dedicated to improving working conditions and supporting the empowerment of workers in the global garment and sportswear industries.
The Clean Clothes Campaign is an alliance of organisations in 16 European countries. Members include trade unions and NGOs covering a broad spectrum of perspectives and interests, such as women’s rights, consumer advocacy and poverty reduction.
The Clean Clothes Campaign Work on a series of basic principles:
-All workers regardless of sex, age, country of origin, legal status, employment status or location, have a right to good and safe working conditions and earn a living wage.
-Workers have a right to know about their rights, they are entitled to education and training in relation to these rights.
-The public has a right to know where and how their garments and sports shoes are produced.
-Trade unions and NGOs should cooperate nationally, regionally and globally to improve conditions in the garment and sports shoe industries and facilitate worker empowerment.
-Companies must be transparent about conditions in, and the structure of, their supply networks and regarding actions undertaken to uphold good labour standards.
Calling for Change :
The lack of a living wage means many garment workers are forced to work long hours to earn overtime or bonuses and cannot risk taking refusing work due to unsafe working conditions or taking time off due to ill health. The low wages mean that workers often have to rely on loans just to make ends meet and have no savings to use if they find themselves out of work.
